Over a hundred stalwarts of the literary world are making their presence felt at the Bangalore Literature Festival this year. Navya D’Souza recommends that you book a front row seat. 


Literary buffs, around the city, are in for a treat as the second edition of the Bangalore Literature Festival (BLF) kicks off on the 27thof September 2013. On till Sunday, the 29th, BLF has roped in more than a hundred authors and speakers to astound book lovers during the three-day fest. This year, the

sprawling lawns of Crowne Plaza Bengaluru, at Electronics City, hosts the various forums, panel discussions, workshops and cultural programmes that are part of the BLF extravaganza. Beginning at 10am, BLF’s packed itinerary includes tête-à-têtes with William Dalrymple, Ramachandra Guha, Gulzar, UR Anathamurthy, Shobhaa De, Shashi Deshpande and Anita Nair.

To commemorate hundred years of Indian Cinema, BLF has scheduled a discussion on mainstream cinema’s adaptation of biographies with Farhan Akhtar, Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra and Prasoon Joshi – the team behind this year’s acclaimed Bhaag Milkha Bhaag. The fest also focuses on cinema writing with Baradwaj Rangan, Sidharth Bhatia, Bhawana Somaaya and others who share their two reams worth. A runaway hit last year, Gulzar returns for a session on lyric writing with Prasoon Joshi joining him.

With the backing of the Sahitya Akademi, India’s National Academy of Letters, the BLF brings together Indian literature’s finest. Award-winning talent from Orissa, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Assam, and West Bengal share their thoughts on the journey and future of Indian literature. This time around, Karnataka’s contribution to literature enjoys a special showcase at the BLF. While celebrating Kannada literature and poetry, BLF also hosts a special session on the oral languages of the state – Tulu, Konkani, Kodava and Beary.

Going beyond boundaries, BLF, this year, has chosen Germany as the country of focus. Having struck a partnership with the Goethe Institut, BLF is bringing in authors from Germany including popular slam poet Bas Böttcher, and writer-musician Tilman Rammstedt.

Round two of the Bangalore Literature Festival promises something for everyone. Those with a penchant for spiritual works can attend Sri Sri Ravi Shankar’s session on spirituality and writing, while history buffs attend lectures by Ramachandra Guha and William Dalrymple. The kiddies can go crazy at activity corners run by Pratham Books, Amar Chithra Katha and Bookalore.

For three days, this September, the Bangalore Literature Festival promises to have your attention book, line and sinker.
