The Zero-Mess Massage

Have you been avoiding that much-due visit to the spa thinking about sticky oil being poured and rubbed onto your already tired body? Move over mess! Opt for one of these fab massages that will set your senses soaring.

Thai Tradition

While we were busy understanding the healing power of herbs and essential oils, the Thai came up with a therapy based on an in-depth understanding of the body’s muscles. Minus any oils and creams, it borders on what we better know as yoga. No, don’t scroll down as yet thinking about boring asanas. With a masseur at help who works in tandem with your muscles, this one loosens the knots in your muscles, thus relieving you of tensions. Post the stretching session, be ready to get pampered as the masseur performs a deep massage, using both, hands and feet. If you are still contemplating, well, for all you unfamiliar touch freaks, you can go for this one with all your clothes on!

Stress Buster

This one is for all those who loved the idea of a shirodhara but cringed at the thought of litres of oil being poured over your forehead. You can instead opt for chilled buttermilk to soothe your senses. No, this is not something we invented but a popular alternative known as takradhara. In fact, many spas add herbs and berry decoctions for added advantage. Apart from having an immediate calming effect, this one helps fight insomnia, stress and depression. All those of you who have been spending sleepless nights thinking about anything else than love, this is for you.

And what’s better, it’s available right in your city – Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai

Pain Killer

If dozen appointments with a masseur have had no long-term effect on a chronic back or muscle pain, perhaps it is time to consider a deep tissue massage. A therapy focused on realigning muscle layers and connecting tissues, this one requires the masseurs to have a strong grip of your pain points. So you can be rest assured about slippery oil rubs being replaced with less messy creams or even better, body wax. However, be ready for some intense massage as the mission here is not to put you to sleep but battle stubborn aches. If you think we are exaggerating, well, deep tissue massage beds are lower than most others, allowing masseurs to have better control on your pressure points.

Rice Treat

Though it may sound Japanese at the first instance, Njavarakizhi is a therapy belonging to the Kerala school of Ayurveda. Best done over a course of days to achieve optimum results, boiled and medicated rice is tied in muslin bags. The bags are then dipped in warm milk before being massaged over the entire body to make you sweat and get rid of the toxins. While certain spas do opt for warm oils to finish it off, it is followed by a warm water bath. Of course if you don’t feel up to it, you can skip the oil cleansing and head for the shower right away. Usually done in unison by two therapists, it is one of the most effective therapies to deal with joint pains.

Slimming Matter

Move over sauna, discover Udwarthanam. Again belonging to the Kerala school of Ayurveda, this one helps mobilise the toxins and reduce obesity. A deep massage using dry herbs and milk (alternatively used instead of oil), trust the therapist to stimulate the body’s hair follicles leading to breakage of the excess subcutaneous fat. Never mind if it sounds complicated. Give it a shot and discover a more toned you without those rigorous early morning workouts at the gym.
