On a big day, like the New Year, when you are stepping into another decade you want your hair to look perfectly in sync with your ensemble. Anything too complicated will be disastrous after hours of partying, and it would be a shame to tie your hair into a high pony at the beginning of the year. We show you 10 flawless hair styles that will ensure your look is admired and even copied!
Hair Updos
Oldest and most popular of hairstyles worn during the holiday season for parties, dinners, or other special outings are updos. Women with both short and long hair can wear updos, and you could either get them done at a salon or do it yourself. Updos are elegant looking and can be worn with casual denims and sweater or a sari or a full-length formal gown. It is ideal to use hair accessories like jewel-studded hair pins to add the oomph factor and secure the updo.
Hair Lowdos
Simple, chic and versatile, a low-do can offer a refreshing change from all the buns and braids that most women will dress up in. Wear a sleek low ponytail or an open French roll style. Side ponytails allow you to show off your natural flowing curls. To add more glamour, you can make a bouffant and pin some flowers or a brooch to complete your look. To get this look, dry your hair and then scrunch with some styling products for a light wave. Pin back your bangs with a decorative bob pin, a tiny barrette or simply use an Alice head band.
Accessorise your hair
A brooch, an Alice head band, a barrette, hair pin, earring or a tiara can tastefully transform any hairdo. In fact, if you wish to jazz up your hair accessories are a boon. Try not to have monotone accessories on your LBD, however, if you decide to use a fluorescent colour, stick to a single shade. Plastic accessories spell ‘cheap’ and loud designs spell ‘tacky’ and should be avoided at all cost. To add a festive look, velvet, cloth, steel and satin accessories do the needful. It is best to do a dress rehearsal wearing the accessories.
Dressy Braids
Braided hair can be very stylish, if you play around with the braiding styles. The best part about braided hair is that they do not need to be managed. French braids are a very popular and they can be dressed up by weaving a strand of sparkly ribbon through the braid. You could also add tiny rhinestone clips, barrettes on the sides of the head or use a multicolour scrunchie to tie the tail if the braid. A French braid that is put in the hair in a diagonal manner, with the braid starting on the top of the head on one side, and flowing down to the opposite side near the neck. To liven up your hair do, experiment with many thin braids all over your scalp or straighten your hair and braid only a small portion on either side of your head. You could also streak or colour this braid.
Classy Chignons
You simply can’t go wrong with this look. It works fabulous on any hair type: straight, curly or wavy hair. You just need the length to get the hair in the roll.
The Pompadour
Derived from Madame de Pompadour has been seen on many models throughout decades. There are many new variations to the pompadour and while styling you could create your signature quiff. Here’s how you create a pompadour. Leave your hair unwashed the previous day, take a section of your hair from the forehead to the crown and backcomb it to create a raised pompadour, secure it with a pin. The rest of your hair can either be tied in a braid, or a French knot or a butterfly clip could be used to hold the hair in place. This is often called the front poof.
To create a full pompadour, starting at the hairline, take one-inch sections and backcomb it using a fine toothed comb. These creates a look of swooped back bangs, making your hair look voluminous; then on smooth them with a broad bristled hair brush, and secure the strands with bobby pins. Now you could experiment and pin up the stands angled around your forehead.
Front Hair Poof
If volume is not your style and if you have smooth silky and thin hair, this is the best version of a front poof. All you have to do is choose a section of your forehead (between the temples) and swoop it back, without backcombing. Now secure them in two bobby pins or tic tacks making an X at the back. A barrette would also do the trick.
Bob and pixie crop
Pixie is by far the most popular due to its androgynous appeal; also if you have a small body frame, the pixie haircut with an Alice head band will surely make heads turn.
A bob cut need not be boring, in fact you could make it snazzy by using a dozen accessories or by adding a glittering strand or by simply using hair gel and hair spray to retain a grunge bed-head look.
Go Minimalistic
Emphasis is on looking breezy and less made up with a non-fussy high ponytail, half pony, or carelessly tossed bun, is the best way to let your outfit have all the spotlight. The only thing to ensure is that your face either has a fresh look or a heavy eye makeup in shades of black, brown blue, purple or grey.
Highlights, Glitter strings and Colours
The solid colour look is a passé, so quit it; but if you like colouring your hair, streaking is quite in fashion. Highlights like glitter strings or woollen strings will enhance the hairdo, but refrain from over doing it.
