‘Tis the season to sink your teeth in the fresh and juicy strawberries and Shirin Mehrotra tells you which restaurants are experimenting with this flavour of the season.
We love strawberries in almost any form – milk shakes, smoothies, strawberry cream or even just wolfing down bowlfuls of the fruit. Yet, we also love to experiment with our food and when the restaurants in the city are dolling out something berry special, we just had to share that with you.
Oven Fresh
One of Shivaji Park’s favourite eateries, Oven Fresh is going all out to promote one of the only berries with seeds on the outside. The seasonal menu includes a strawberry taco salad, chilled strawberry soup and even strawberry steak in barbeque sauce.
If you thought the main course sounded interesting, you might want to check out the dessert menu with the strawberry charlotte, strawberry cream cheese and almond tart, a strawberry sour cream smoothie, strawberry passion fruit mousse cake, frozen yogurt, strawberry cheesecake and even a strawberry macaroon pastry.
Café At NCPA
NCPA’s open-air cafe is serving up strawberry smoothies and mocktails to celebrate the fruit. Try their all berry bang, which has a mix of strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, apple juice, strawberry yogurt and ice. We reckon that makes one heck of an antioxidant blast. You might also want to try the Raspberry Ripe – a chocolate, raspberry, skimmed milk or soy low-fat strawberry yogurt sorbet and ice go into this yum smoothie. If you are in mood for a mocktail, we suggest you pick the Frozen red snapper. An ice blended strawberry and vanilla Chantilly cream combination, it’s just right for this time of the year.
Umame
The new Pan –Asian restaurant that replaced Joss recently is serving up a Sushi of StrawManBa in chocolate nori with a kiwi wasabi and blue berry shoyu on their dessert menu. Now, there’s a few things we’d like to put on our wish list this year.
Amadeus
Amadeus, the Spanish restaurant at the NCPA is serving Filo Mille Feuille of fresh strawberries with quark. Sweet and mildly salty, the combination is one we’d gladly skip the starter and main course for this every time.
Woodside All Day Bar & Eatery
The holiday season list can’t be complete without a little tipple. The Wild strawberry Roquetini cocktail at Woodside All Day Bar & Eatery fits this bill beautifully. Try it out next time you are there or test your bartending skills as you try this at home for friends.
