FYI: New hangouts for the New Year

Kick-start the New Year with some delicious bread, live barbeques and lots of mouth-watering desserts, says Anjum Chevalwala.

We are barely two weeks into the New Year and our diary is already brimming with new places to check out around Mumbai.

bakers dozenThe Baker’s Dozen @ Wadala

The new neighbourhood artisan bakery is the brainchild of Sneh Jain an MBA from IIM Ahmedabad and his wife Aditi who has studied the science of baking at the International Culinary Institute in New York. The bakery specialises in breads like focaccia, pain aux cereal, four grain and raagi bread. More varieties will be added to the menu as the bakery expands. With breads using grains, pumpkin, sesame and flax seeds and not using any preservatives and emulsifiers the bakery plans to add a fresh little touch to breakfast. The Baker’s Dozen is currently operating from its central kitchen in Wadala and will soon open the first outlet in Prabhadevi. Stay tuned!

Barbeque Nation now @ Worli
barbeque nation live grill

The city’s much-loved live grill restaurant is now in South Bombay. Barbeque Nation’s newly opened outlet at Atria Mall is the latest addition to the fleet of restaurants in Worli. Since they have a rotating menu, you can try something new every time you visit. If you have a favourite dish, we suggest you call ahead and check if it’s a part of the menu for the day. With a live grill on your table, dining at Barbeque Nation is always a fun experience.

The bite sized cake pops from Yogurtbay prove the adage that good things come in little packages. This little delight is a round shaped cake covered in melted chocolate and mounted on a popsicle stick.  Available in a variety of flavours including a pairing of red velvet cake and chocolate, this little treat promises to be addictive and have our sweet tooth spoilt rotten in the New Year.

Burgs @ Andheri

Andheri’s finally got its very own dedicated burger joint. Burgs Gourmet Goodness launched its first store in Bandra in early 2012 and received a mixed feedback. The outlet has a blue and white furnishing with a crisp clean look, befitting a fitness centre, though it is far from being one. Some people who swear by the burgers here recommend the Asli Indian and Mac and Cheeseburger. They also serve a variety of milkshakes and ice slush. After going though the menu and seeing options like the prawn cracker, Dijon chicken and the nawabi lamb burger, we can’t wait to dig right in.

nature's basketGodrej Nature’s Basket @ Hill Road

Your trusted one stop shop for gourmet shopping has moved into a new home. Previously housed under Moshes’s, near Ray’s Pizzeria on Hill Road, it has now scooted down the road over and plays neighbour to the New Bank of India Building. Hop in for their selection of wines, cold cuts, cheese, organic foods and rare ingredients from around the world that are sometimes hard to find at your local grocery store.

san churro'sChocolateria San Churro’s @ Lokhandwala

Australia’s favourite chocolate cafe, Chocolateria San Churro’s, is opening their third outlet in Mumbai. They have a wide variety of desserts to offer; cakes, brownies, chocolates, coffee, ice creams, milk shakes and a whole lot more. With the temperature dropping by the day, a cup of their Spanish hot chocolate might be just thing you need. We suggest you don’t waste time and dive into this chocolate heaven as soon as it opens its gate.

With such a brilliant start to the New Year, we are looking forwards to lots of fun and whole lot of belly rumbling burps in 2013.
