Although most alcoholics would disagree, we do think a ‘non-alcoholic’ bar is more than just a glorified juice counter. And who better to give you recipes than our writer from Ahmedabad, Anjali Jain.
Whether you live in the Dry State of Gujarat or are following lent or then simply prefer steering clear of high spirits, mocktails are way more fun than a glass of cola or plain ol’ juice. Here are a few recipes that’ll make sure you don’t miss the alcohol and stay pretty cool this summer. Set up your bar and try your hand at the following mocktails. Don’t forget to customize them to suit your tastes.
No-Hangover Pomegranate-Apple Rossini
1 ounce chilled pomegranate juice
5 ounces chilled sparkling apple cider
Lemon twist for garnish
Pour apple cider into a champagne flute. Gently pour pomegranate juice over the back of a spoon onto the surface of the cider. The juice should linger at the top, moving down to colour the rest of the drink slowly. Garnish with lemon.
Virgin White Sangria
3 cups white grape juice
1 bottle sparkling apple cider
2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
1 apple, cubed
1 cup fresh or canned pineapple chunks, juices drained
1 orange, sliced thin
2 drops vanilla extract
Extra fruit for garnish
In a large pitcher or punch bowl, combine juice, cut fruit and vanilla extract. Cover and let it chill for at least two hours. Remove from refrigerator. Add in sparkling cider. Serve in wine glasses or champagne flutes with plenty of ice and fruit for garnish.
12 fluid ounces cranberry-raspberry juice
1 (12 fluid ounce) can or bottle lemon-lime flavoured carbonated beverage
In a pitcher, mix cranberry-raspberry juice with lemon-lime soda. Pour over ice and serve.
2 bottles ginger ale, chilled
1 can pineapple juice, chilled
1 bottle white grape juice, chilled
To make Ice ring: Fill a ring-shaped cake pan to 1/2 with ginger ale. Freeze until partially frozen. At this stage you can place edible flowers, or pieces of fruit around the ring. Fill pan with ginger ale and freeze until solid. Place in punch bowl just before serving. In a large punch bowl, combine 1 bottle ginger ale, pineapple juice and white grape juice.
Hot Not Toddy
7 oz hot tea
1 Tbsp honey
1 tsp lemon juice
Lemon wedge for garnish
In an Irish coffee glass pour the honey, lemon and spices. Top with hot, brewed tea. Stir. Garnish with a lemon wedge.
A quick tip – A successful and memorable mocktail has three components: crisp flavours, a splash of colour (provided by juice, decorative straws or tinted glasses) and a festive garnish to elevate the beverage from average to special.
