Shirin Mehrotra goes through popular TVCs and lists a few that have us glued and a few that make you want to reach for the remote control.
Some that we loved
Dove – Real Beauty Sketches
More than the products, we’re fans of Dove’s television commercials. But their latest short film, produced by Ogilvy & Mather definitely takes the cake. The film proves that most people don’t give themselves enough credit and more often than not, everyone is perceived as more beautiful than they themselves think they are. The video got over 15 million views within a week of its release. Need we say more?
LG Ultra HD 84” TV
You’ve just been punked! We’re just glad no one had a heart attack from this prank pulled for the making of this LG Electronics commercial from Chile. We were left wondering how we’d react in the same situation.
For your mother’s sake…wear a helmet
This campaign by the Mumbai Traffic Police is one of most touching public service ads to come out recently. The film doesn’t get very melodramatic or preachy much but gets the message across in the simplest way possible.
Some that made us cringe
Park Avenue Beer Shampoo
Apart from the fact that the product doesn’t make much sense, the commercial is pretty obnoxious too. We couldn’t quite understand whether the ad is promoting the beer shampoo or making fun of it. The longhaired dude shouting “MAAAN HAIR” every two seconds make us wonder what were the makers thinking.
Airtel 3G’s latest ads borderline on melodrama befitting Bollywood movies. The stereotyping makes us cringe, whether it’s the young boy playing antakshari with the speech and hearing impaired girl or the watchman sending a Facebook friend request to the cool guy in the elevator.
The only reaction we have for this ad is… really? What were they thinking? Oh wait, they weren’t. They were too busy deciding the perfect frame.
And some which were pure gold…
During the course of our research we came across a few ads, which were so bad that were ‘good’. Well at least good enough to merit a mention.
Can you recognise the Kanjivaram clad woman in this ad? Yes, it’s Vidya Balan from one of her pre-Dirty Picture days.
Lux Touch Innerwear
If you are buying ‘panties’ from roadside stalls and shady stores, you’ve been warned. After watching this commercial, you half expect Laxmi Chachi to show up at your doorstep, rolling pin in hand, with CC television footage and threaten to beat you silly for this grave offence.
